Ok. Turning off the main xmitter switch via "airplane mode" does cause
most activities to come to a grinding halt. The map tiles that are
cached still display, but there is lots of grey area. Searches don't
work and directions can't be generated. This is expected is it not?

Try an experiment for me? What happens when the thing goes off the
network? What happens if it even just goes off the 3G network coverage.
What happens if you're off the grid and get off a pre-generated route?

I hven't tried a logger but my Loox PDA has SiRF III embedded. It can also
be idiosyncratic about how long it takes to get a first fix. The existence
of a service through which satellite data can be downloaded over the web to

You're welcome, Sam. I also expect Garmin and Tom Tom to try hard to
figure out some way to keep a slice of the pie. I think we will start
to see a convergence. Google's hardware vendors have to do much better
in the power management department in order to compete with traditional
GPS's and I expect that they will. Garmin and Tom Tom need to do better

AMOD AGL3080 gps tracker
I recently bought one of the above gps trackers to help me to geotag photos
with the minimum of fuss. I was very pleased with its features and specs and
it seemed (and still seems) just what I wanted. BUT after trying it for a few
days I'm *very* disappointed with unit's sensitivity and accuracy.

There was a piece on Morning Edition this morning... which, among
other things, suggested that Darwinian principles apply, i.e., that
Garmin, Tom Tom, etc. will adapt (innovate) if they are to survive
the "smart phone" revolution.

I've now gotten a chance to play with Google's cell phone navigation
application driving around town. All I can say is wow. This thing sure
beats using my Garmin GPSMAP 60csx. The first difference is the screen
is nicely decluttered with the important information presented in bold
type in the margins of the mapping area. The voice synthesis is loud
